CN2 (China Telecom Next Generation Carrier Network) is a multi-service carrier network capable of supporting converged applications for data, voice, and video, laying a solid foundation for China Telecom's future NGN services. VPS supporting the CN2 network tends to be more expensive, but the network quality is highly reliable. A few months ago, I joined a StarryDNS promotion, purchasing a 1-core/512MB/20GB configuration for 42 RMB/month. I have renewed it for several months since then, and both speed and stability have been excellent.

StarryDNS utilizes both OpenVZ and KVM virtualization architectures. All China-optimized lines support the CN2 network (select the Shatin CN2 option). OpenVZ offers better cost-performance ratio, while KVM has advantages in architecture and performance, albeit at a slightly higher price. Users can choose based on their needs.

1. Ping Test

Local Ping Test Local Ping

Using a local Sichuan Telecom network, I sent 100 ICMP packets with a 0% packet loss rate. Both the local ping and super ping average response times are stable around 50ms, comparable to domestic data centers. However, ping values do not necessarily reflect actual speed.

2. Speed Test

Downloading a 40MB file from the server to the local machine yielded an average speed of 900KB/s, equivalent to approximately 7Mbps bandwidth.

Uploading a 30MB file from the local machine resulted in an average speed of 250KB/s, equivalent to roughly 2Mbps bandwidth.

Testing YouTube directly, I attempted to play a 720p video. According to YouTube's statistics, the speed was around 5Mbps, reaching up to 8Mbps at times. 720p playback is smooth. See the screenshot below.

3. Route Tracing

Local route tracing from Sichuan Telecom shows the traffic routing through the Shanghai CN2 network, avoiding the detour to SoftLayer data centers in the US.

4. Other Notes

  • StarryDNS supports a Chinese interface and Alipay payments.
  • Please fill in information as truthfully as possible to avoid fraud detection and order rejection.
  • If payment fails, submit a ticket to customer service.
  • The English interface defaults to PayPal, while the Chinese interface supports Alipay; you can submit a ticket to change payment methods.
  • The included disk comes unpartitioned by default. Please refer to the official documentation to create a new partition and mount it to /home.
  • For the Hong Kong data center, it is recommended to choose the Shatin CN2 line.

5. Conclusion

Comparing StarryDNS's Hong Kong CN2 line VPS prices with foreign VPS providers shows no significant advantage. However, the CN2 network offers excellent line quality for mainland China, fully meeting requirements for both personal website hosting and running Shadowsocks services. Most of the test data above was from Sichuan Telecom and may not represent network speeds in other regions, so monthly payment is recommended. A minor drawback is that the lowest configuration limits traffic to 200GB per month, which should suffice for individual use but might be tight for multiple users.
