Namesilo is a well-known domain registration and management platform. Established in 2009 and headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, USA, Namesilo offers extensive domain registration services, including almost all Top-Level Domains (TLDs) and some Country Code Top-Level Domains (ccTLDs).

Currently, most of my domains are hosted on Namesilo. Today, I attempted to top up my balance using a Nobepay virtual card, but my account was immediately frozen.

Problem Review

On May 28, 2023, I planned to top up my Namesilo balance. Considering there was still some money in my Nobepay virtual card, I used a Nobepay card from the 558068 card segment to make the payment.

  1. The first time I entered the credit card information, the payment failed.
  2. I assumed the credit card details were incorrect, so I copied the information again for a second attempt, which also failed.
  3. Suspecting the card itself was the issue, I switched to another Nobepay virtual card, also from the 558068 segment, but with a different card number, name, and address. Immediately after clicking submit, I received a notification that my account was frozen, and the session was automatically terminated.

Attempting to manually log in to Namesilo again resulted in the following message:

Sorry, your account is currently inactive and you are not able to login.

Namesilo Account Frozen

I have many important domains on Namesilo, so this was a serious situation.

Contacting Customer Support

I immediately contacted the online customer service on the Namesilo website. Fortunately, Namesilo provides direct human support rather than automated bots.

After explaining the situation and requesting account unblocking, I received a response within minutes. The customer service agent sent me a form link.

Support Form Link

The form required me to submit photos of my bank card and proof of identity.

Verification Form

After clicking submit, there was no response. I contacted online customer service again, who instructed me to send an email for feedback.

Email Instruction

I promptly drafted an email explaining the situation and sent it to the Namesilo support email address. Within tens of minutes, I received a reply containing a new form link with a token.

New Form Link

I opened the link and submitted the required documents again, providing a screenshot of the Nobepay virtual card backend (with sensitive information redacted) and my passport information. About an hour later, Namesilo sent an email confirming that my account had been unblocked. They also noted that they do not support most virtual cards.

Risk Control Speculation

Due to the low threshold for virtual cards, many card segments may have been blacklisted. I speculate that the freeze was caused by the card segment itself or by the discrepancy between the name entered on Namesilo and the name on the virtual card.

Lessons Learned

  1. Be cautious with virtual cards: Avoid using virtual cards to top up critical business accounts, as this may lead to account suspension.
  2. Consistency is key: When registering for foreign services, do not fill in names and addresses randomly. If your account gets frozen, you will be stuck when asked to provide proof. Fortunately, I used my real name on Namesilo.
  3. Match names if using virtual cards: If you must use a virtual card, ensure the name registered with the service provider matches the name on the virtual card.

Conclusion

Thanks to the assistance of Namesilo's customer service, I successfully recovered my account after this incident. Fortunately, everything went smoothly without further complications. I want to commend Namesilo for their efficiency and service; even on weekends, they have staff available online.
