China Merchants Bank Mastercard Debit Card: Application Guide and Spending Test
Recently, while browsing X, I learned that China Merchants Bank (CMB) has launched a Mastercard debit card. As a card collector, I naturally couldn't miss this opportunity. This article records and shares the entire application process and spending tests, which may be useful for those interested.

What Are the Special Advantages of the CMB Mastercard Debit Card?
The CMB Mastercard debit card does not have obvious advantages. If you already have VISA or MasterCard foreign currency cards, this card is optional. However, if you do not have a foreign currency card yet, it is worth applying for. If we must mention advantages, they are roughly as follows:
- Low application threshold
- 10 RMB WeChat instant discount for new account opening
- 0.5% subsidy on foreign currency spending (this activity seems to be time-limited, not long-term)
- No need to exchange currency in advance for foreign currency spending; settle directly in RMB with an exchange rate comparable to Google
- Free first ATM withdrawal per month overseas for standard cards
This is a debit card, debit card, debit card—not a credit card. Therefore, it does not check credit history and does not affect your credit score!
What Conditions Are Required for Application?
You only need a job and social security payment records to apply; there are no special thresholds.
How to Apply?
- Open the CMB App and search for "Mastercard Debit Card" to apply for an appointment.
- After selecting a branch, you will generally receive a success SMS within a few minutes.
- Bring your ID card, go to the branch to collect and activate the card. The entire process takes less than 10 minutes.
If you are in a first or second-tier city, you can generally get the card on the same day you apply. Since I already have a CMB Class I account, this Mastercard debit card was issued as a Class II account, with a daily limit of 5,000 RMB.
The card is pre-printed and does not have a name printed on it. The card quality is average, not as good as their credit cards.
Spending Test
Before spending, you need to deposit funds into the account. The scenarios I tested include:
- Can be bound to PayPal for spending
- Can be bound to Alipay and WeChat for spending
- No need to exchange currency in advance for foreign currency spending; settle directly in RMB with an exchange rate comparable to Google
- Bills do not appear immediately in the App after spending; the spending amount will be frozen
- Successfully spent USD at Spaceship, but USD spending at Bunny CDN was rejected
Comparison with CITIC Bank Mastercard Debit Card
In my previous article Sharing My Pitfalls When Applying for a Foreign Currency Debit Card at CITIC Bank, I shared my experience with CITIC Bank's Mastercard debit card. The CMB Mastercard debit card is significantly better than CITIC Bank's, mainly reflected in the following:
| Function/Comparison | China Merchants Bank Mastercard Debit Card | CITIC Bank Mastercard Debit Card |
|---|---|---|
| Application Threshold | Low | Low |
| Account Opening Process | Simple | Relatively complicated |
| Account Opening Duration | Apply and get card on the same day | About 1 week |
| Direct Foreign Currency Spending | Supported | Not supported; need to purchase exchange currency in advance |
| Frozen Amount for Foreign Spending | 100% | Over-frozen with long freezing duration |
| Rejection Rate | Average | Easily rejected; many scenarios not supported |
Note: "Frozen Amount for Foreign Spending" refers to the fact that if you spend $10 in foreign currency, CMB will freeze $10. However, CITIC Bank will over-freeze, for example, freezing $12, and you cannot see real-time records!!
