How UK Companies Can Apply for ICO Fee Exemption
The ICO (Information Commissioner's Office) is the UK's independent body responsible for upholding information rights in the public interest, promoting openness by public bodies, and data privacy. It enforces data protection laws, including the Data Protection Act (DPA) and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

Introduction
Shortly after registering a UK company, I received an email forwarded by my agent 1st Formations. The attached PDF from the scan indicated that the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) requires organizations processing personal data to pay an annual fee based on their activities. Failure to register on time could result in fines of up to £4,000.
The content generally looks like this:

If you have received a similar email, further action is required. If you have not received such a notification, no further action is needed.
Fee Assessment
The ICO provides a self-assessment method available at: https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/data-protection-fee/data-protection-fee-self-assessment/. You can evaluate your eligibility based on the questionnaire provided.
Applying for Fee Exemption
Since the UK company I registered has no actual business operations and has not used the company name to provide services (such as user registration), I was able to qualify for a fee exemption after completing the self-assessment. At this point, an exemption application must be submitted.

Further Steps
Completing the steps above only means you have submitted an ICO fee exemption application; it does not guarantee that no fee is due. Wait approximately one week, then visit: https://ico.org.uk/for-organisations/data-protection-fee/contact-us-data-protection-fee/ to contact online customer service or send an email for confirmation.
I communicated with ICO customer service online. They requested my company name and registration number and confirmed that the fee had been exempted. Thus, the ICO fee exemption application process is complete.
According to my understanding, the ICO fee must be re-evaluated annually. Therefore, please pay attention to notifications from the ICO or your agent. Process them promptly upon receipt to avoid fines.
Important Notes
- After submitting an online ICO fee exemption application, you will not receive any email notification; only a webpage submission success message will appear.

- It is recommended to wait one week after applying for the ICO fee exemption and then confirm with customer service via online chat or email whether the exemption was successful.
