Captura is a very simple Windows screen recording tool that supports multiple languages. It is open source and free, so interested users are encouraged to try it.

Using Captura

Captura defaults to an English interface. You can switch to Chinese by opening Settings and navigating to the location shown below.

Configure FFmpeg

Captura relies on another open-source tool, FFmpeg, for screen recording. The FFmpeg bundled with Captura may not be accessible in China. You can download FFmpeg separately and set the path manually.

A pre-compiled Windows binary version of FFmpeg is available from the following link: https://github.com/BtbN/FFmpeg-Builds/releases

After downloading, extract it to any path and point Captura to the FFmpeg folder, as shown below.

Solving the Issue of No Audio in Captura Recordings

When using Captura to record video, you might find there is no sound. This can be resolved with the following settings: Open Windows Settings > Sound > Sound Control Panel.

Switch to the Recording tab and enable Stereo Mix.

Then restart the Captura client. In the audio options, check "Stereo Mix". Note: You must restart the Captura client after enabling Stereo Mix to see the option.

Conclusion

Captura is a very minimalist screen recording software with no ads, no bundling, and it is free and open source. It is relatively simple to use, but unfortunately, it is not ready to use out of the box. Additionally, the author has stopped maintaining the software, which is a pity.

Side Note: According to the GitHub introduction, someone appears to have rebranded and repackaged Captura as a paid software. After the author became disheartened, they stopped maintenance.
