An Analysis of Current Website Monetization Models
Recently, I participated in an entrepreneurship competition and planned to build a website. Therefore, I conducted a comprehensive collection and organization of the main monetization models for websites today to share with everyone.
Website Monetization Model 1: Online Advertising
Online advertising platforms utilize banners, text links, and multimedia on websites to publish advertisements on the internet and deliver them to internet users. Online advertising has unique advantages and is an important part of implementing modern marketing media strategies. It is one of the main methods of network marketing and holds a pivotal position in the network marketing system. Advertising is the most common monetization model, with various forms ranging from banners to Flash multimedia animations.
Currently, the advertising model that is most promising is charging by click count. Many large websites in the internet industry adopt this form. For example, Google's revenue of $3.1 billion last year was basically derived from this advertising model. As long as you have a large number of browsing groups (preferably a specific type of professional browsing group), you meet the conditions for charging website advertising. Of course, you can also become an advertising partner of large websites to earn some profits. Additionally, a concept called "narrow advertising" is now popular, which targets more professional browsing groups rather than general traffic, thereby significantly increasing the proportion of effective users.

Online Advertising Models:
| Model | Definition | Application Scenario |
|---|---|---|
| CPM | Charged per thousand impressions | Advertising display on portal websites like Sina and Sohu |
| CPC | Charged per user click | Baidu's paid ranking |
| CPA | Charged per user action | Guiding users to register as website members |
| CPS | Charged based on actual sales | QQ rebate |
Among these, CPM and CPC are favorable to channel providers but unfavorable to advertisers, as advertisers cannot measure advertising effectiveness. In comparison, CPA and CPS are favorable to advertisers because advertisers pay based on results.
Website Monetization Model 2: Personal Transaction Platform Service (C2C)
C2C means e-commerce between individuals. For example, if a consumer has an old computer and sells it to another consumer via the internet, this type of transaction is called C2C e-commerce. Currently, Taobao is the standout operator in the C2C online shopping market, occupying 85% of the market share. Once-dominant eBay has lost its glory due to Taobao's aggressive attacks and its own strategic mistakes. However, Tencent's Paipai has carved out a small niche in the C2C model thanks to QQ's massive user base.
Website Monetization Model 3: Online Retail (B2C Model)
B2C stands for "Business to Consumer," another e-commerce model, commonly known as commercial retail, which directly sells products and services to consumers. This form of e-commerce is mainly online retail, primarily relying on the internet to conduct online sales activities. B2C provides consumers with a new shopping environment—the online store—where consumers can shop and pay online. Currently, the biggest winner in online retail is Amazon in the United States. Amazon is arguably the world's largest online retail store, with sales reaching over $6.9 billion last year.
Of course, there are many excellent B2C websites in China. For example, JD.com, as a professional 3C online shopping platform in China's B2C market, has significant influence in terms of traffic, click-through rates, sales volume, and industry reputation among domestic 3C online shopping platforms. In 2007, JD.com's sales exceeded 350 million RMB, achieving three consecutive years of 300% growth.
Website Monetization Model 4: B2B Transaction Platform
B2B refers to transactions between businesses. The representative website for this model is Alibaba. Since the target group is limited to businesses, although the scope is not as broad as the general public, businesses have better payment capabilities and larger transaction capabilities. For businesses, the profit from closing one deal far exceeds the membership fees paid. In recent years, various industries in China have launched many vertical B2B industry websites. With advantages such as high professionalism and relatively low fees, their prospects are also very optimistic.
Website Monetization Model 5: Software Downloads
Websites like Pacific Download, Xixi Software Park, Sky Software Station, and Feifan Software Station are well-known domestic software download sites. The primary monetization method for these sites is paid downloads and software promotion. For instance, some installation alliance groups earn income by pre-installing software, but this has also led to domestic software, although free, being bundled with various plugins.
Website Monetization Model 6: Network Infrastructure Services
Building a website requires purchasing a domain name and renting server virtual hosting services. For example, China Netcom provides domain name registration. In addition, many smaller-scale websites are also engaged in domain name registration and server hosting businesses.
Website Monetization Model 7: Mobile Value-Added Services
Mobile operation services such as SMS and ringtones have emerged in recent years. The internet SMS and ringtone downloads not only brought more thoughtful services and colorful ringtones and multimedia messages to mobile users but also provided a very good profit model for converting website traffic into revenue for major websites. At one point, the operating income from SMS and ringtones accounted for about 40% of the total income of China's three major portals, highlighting its importance. In just a few years, the number of domestic SMS and ringtone service providers (telecom value-added service SPs) reached around 5,000, and the professional SMS and ringtone website "Palmtone" even listed on NASDAQ last year.
If your website has good traffic, you can cooperate with professional SMS and ringtone SP websites to earn some profits. Of course, if you have more investment and technical strength, you can also become an SP member. However, looking at market performance, SPs generally show a downward trend. It is estimated that doing this now will be very difficult.
The above is a personal collection and organization of the main monetization models for websites today. Of course, the internet market is always unpredictable, and anything that meets user needs could become a website monetization method.
